What causes macular degeneration? I heard a rumor that may be caused by the sun without sunglasses. Is that true? If so, visible light or ultraviolet light cause damage?

People develop macular degeneration as part of the natural aging process of the body. Less commonly, macular degeneration is an inherited disease, such as juvenile macular degeneration. Injury, infection, inflammation, or extreme myopia can also damage the delicate tissues of the macula.
The two most common types of age-related macular degeneration, "dry" (atrophic) and "wet" (exudative):
"Dry" macular degeneration (also invilutional atrophy or macular) degeneration:
Type far the most common "dry" macular degeneration is caused by aging and thinning of the tissues of the macula. Vision loss is usually gradual.
"Wet" macular degeneration (including exudative macular degeneration or hemorrhage)

* Race: Macular degeneration is more common in whites but occurs in all ethnic groups.

* A high intake of saturated fats and cholesterol
High cholesterol levels in blood
* Hyperopia (farsightedness)
* Sun exposure
* Family history
